Martial arts classes for adults and kids in Langley
Our Langley academy is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school for adults and kids. Adult classes run on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, including a Foundations class for complete beginners on Mondays, and kids jiu-jitsu classes, grouped by age, run on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. There are also No-Gi grappling classes, Lil Tots for ages 4–5 and Boxing Foundations on Saturdays. It is a martial art built on control rather than striking, which is what makes it such practical self-defence for adults and such a good fit for kids.
Founder & Head Instructor — the Father of BJJ in Canada
9th-Degree Red Belt · Direct student of Carlson Gracie
Widely recognised as the Father of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Canada, Marcus is a 9th-degree red belt with more than 56 years on the mats and over 50 years of teaching. He joined the Carlson Gracie team in 1970 — the very first generation — and taught at the Carlson Gracie Academy in Copacabana before becoming, in 1997, the first black belt to teach BJJ in Canada. Today, nearly 30 years on, he remains the only Grandmaster in the country and still teaches across all three academies.

Our son Bennett is the youngest member here, having started at just 4 years old, and we couldn't be happier. The coaches are incredibly patient, supportive and skilled at working with young children while teaching real discipline, confidence and technique. His confidence has grown tremendously and he's constantly excited to attend. Highly recommend to any parent looking for an outstanding program for their child!

Joining Marcus Soares BJJ Langley has been one of the best decisions I've ever made — the last 2.5 years have been amazing, physically and mentally. My daughter has some anxiety around unfamiliar situations and was nervous to join, but Marcus and Dana made it fun, respectful and so welcoming that she had no problems joining in. They've created a great atmosphere that's relaxed and welcoming to absolutely everyone.

I have been training with Marcus Soares since 2018 and it has been an incredible experience. His knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is excellent, and he has a unique ability to teach techniques in a way that is easy to understand and apply. Marcus is patient, professional and genuinely cares about the development of his students, regardless of their skill level.

We have been attending Marcus Soares Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for a little over a year and the growth I have seen from my kids is amazing. Not many people get to train with the only red belt in Canada — Marcus' passion for teaching is evident!

My son was intimidated his first class, and Dana quickly noticed and helped him through it. He started the class with tears and ended with an "I loved it!" Marcus has a way of building confidence in little ones — he used to be quite timid, and now I see him stand up for himself. Highly recommend!
